South of France property for sale
France
The south of France is colloquially known as Le Midi, of Middle French derivative meaning ‘The Midday sun’ and covers an area loosely corresponding to Occitania, the area where Occitan was the dominant language in contrast to the langues d’oїl spoken in the North. Greek and Roman heritage and influence is evident in the South of France and relics of their time there lay abound such as amphitheatres, coliseums and aqueducts. Christianity also dominates much of the architecture to include rose windows, imposing stone monasteries and beautiful carved statues of Christian idolatry.
The South of France offers much to see and do, from the golden sands and glamour of the Riviera to the inland vineyards and lavender fields, from the major cities to rival Paris such as Marseille and Aix-en-Provence to the smaller villages such as Toulon, where specialist art galleries are tucked away down cobbled streets. Basked in sunshine for most of the year, the South of France is a popular destination for many and plays host to major international events such as the legendary Cannes film festival and the Avignon festival. With low cost airlines and the extension of the TGV network these delights are now easier than ever to access from the UK.
