Chamonix is known as the Alpine capital of the world; a true four-season resort, it is as busy (if not busier) in summer as it is in winter. The town itself is a bustling resort with a wide variety of bars, shops and restaurants. Chamonix Centre is car-free and full of alpine charm, with its cobbled streets, pretty squares and beautiful old buildings. The amount of ski and hiking terrain on offer is outstanding, with the ski areas of Brevent-Flegere, Argentiere, Le Tour and Les Houches accessible from the various parts of the Chamonix Valley. If these vast areas weren't enough, Verbier and Courmayer are easy day-trips. Although the skiing is disconnected and it is necessary to travel by bus, train or car between the different areas, the local infrastructure is geared up to transport skiers and boarders quickly and efficiently.
